It can go by various descriptive names: skin disorder, skin irritation, skin ailment, the itch. But eczema is a skin disruption that can cause pain and suffering to millions around the world. It can range from mild to life altering severe. One of the most common and suffered by children and babies is called atopic eczema. Eczema is like your skin is complaining – something isn't right. Scaly crusted scaby dry – all these terms can apply to eczema laden skin. Eczema can also appear as individual or clumps of red pimply sores. Eczema this bad absolutely needs medical attention – if probably cannot get better without help. If left unattended, eczema will tend to get worse. You will try to ease the itch and pain by scratching and that will only prolong the suffering. After scratching, the eczema area may ooze clear fluid which may even contain specks of blood. Damage done by scratching the affected area can lead to an open would and be subject to infection. Eczema can flare up for no apparent reason even if you have had no prior history. With an onset in older adults, it is often because through the years our skin has become thin and more sensitive to things in the environment. In a sense it is like an allergic reaction. But it doesn't matter, eczeme can drive you up the wall with itch. By scratching we make it more difficult for the skin to do what it is intended to do – that is to protect us against heat, cold, bacterial infections. In almost every case of eczema, it is advisable to seek treatment. Treatment can be as simple as keeping your skin moisturized or the taking of antibiotic or special steroidal creams. In some cases, hospitalization can be required if scratching the itch has lead to infection. For many people, the skin is just there. They tend to ignore it and its needs. But the skin, like the rest of our bodies needs some tlc if it is to do its job properly. Remember, the skin does more than just look pretty, it is an important part of our health and well being. |
