The Eczema Scalp |
|
Are you suffering from eczema of the scalp? Is your scalp dry and scaly? Is your scalp itchy? Eczema of the scalp can be an itchy, dry, prickly sensation that will be extremely annoying to those who suffer from it. It is true that eczema can affect different parts of the body but the scalp is one of the most common areas. On the head, the oil glands contained in the skin is involved. It seems that the more oil that is produced, the more the eczema can be an irritent. Other areas of the body that are prone to this type of eczema are the eyebrows and the sides of the nose. This particular type of eczema is known as seborrhoeic dermatitis or seborrhoeic eczema. Scalp eczema is often first noticed at puberty, when the sensitive areas begin to produce more oils because of the hormones that begin to flood the body. But this type of eczema can appear at almost any age. It does appear to be more common in men than in women though. This type of eczema is a chronic condition although it can go through periods of being dormant. It can flare up for no apparent reason and long periods of time. Other times, it is always there with virtually no period when it is not active. The exact causes of scalp eczema is unknown. It is thought that a skin fungus toxin may overwhelm the immune system causing the outbreak. It is know however that stress can make the condition worse. The first symptoms can be rather mild like a mild case of dandruff. But soon the usual dandruff shampoo doesn't work. The condition can quickly escalate to having a very oily scalp with itchy, red and irritated skin on the scalp. Scaly patches are also quite common. And being itchy, the scalp is scratched which can lead to broken skin and infection. Treatment often consists of topical creams or ointments that are applied directly to the affected skin areas. Stronger, medicated shampoos can also be helpful when used on a regular basis. For more severe cases, a hydrocortisone cream (as steroidal cream) will be prescribed although recent studies that the use of such cream does not cure but only masks the symptoms. But as the itching is soothed, then the scalp may take the opportunity to heal itself. There also natural products on the market that seem to have some benefit. Natural oils such as neem or hemp can help and lavender can help to soothe and heal. Shampoos that contain a natural 'sufactant' like coconut oil or yukka to foam will be more gentle on your scalp. |
